If you’ve ever worn a Fitbit or other pedometer, you know the little confidence boost you feel when you hit 10,000 steps—your watch buzzes, gives you a congratulatory light show and leaves you feeling accomplished.
On the flip side, you probably also know the stress of not making it to 10,000. If this sounds like you, stop right now and read this truth: There is nothing magical about taking 10,000 steps. That big, round number we've all accepted as the gold standard in fitness was actually started as a 1960s marketing tool to sell pedometers in Japan. The Yamasa Clock and Instrument Company, a clock company, named its new pedometer product the "Manpo-
That doesn’t mean your more modern "Manpo-
"If a tracker helps you move more it can be a helpful tool; but if it causes anxiety or frustration, it may not be worthwhile," says Smith, a certified trainer and the creator of the "Walk On" series of fitness videos and DVDs. "A daily step goal may help motivate some to get up and walk more often throughout their day (not just during their workout time), which is always a great thing."
Science backs them up, too: Even though the 10,000-step number was marketing, there is research to support counting your daily steps. In a study of 16,741 older women, those who averaged 4,400 steps or more had a significantly lower risk of death compared to those taking 2,700 or fewer steps per day. Those benefits continued to increase up to 7,500 steps per day, but—surprise—didn’t increase with more than that. A Japanese study of older people had similar results: Those who took more than 7,972 steps per day were less likely to die over the period studied than those who took fewer than 4,503 steps per day.
So there’s your new step goal, pedometer-wearer: 7,500 to 7,972 steps per day. But don’t stop there! There are many other benchmarks that will improve your entire life. Strive for these four other science-backed standards in your daily routine to reduce disease risk, get more active, and lower your risk of premature death. read more:

Who knew that BAY LEAVES could be so healthy
I do use bay leaves in a couple of the old family holiday recipes, but I never knew how healthy they could be. . . check out this great information that I found online.
These are called "Bay leaves"
Many people add bay leaves to foods especially jollof rice(Nigerian), red meat and poultry but do you know why bay leaves are added to food? When asked why, some reply: to add flavor to the food👐
Do you know that If you boil some bay leaves in a glass of water and taste it, it will have no flavor?
Now why do you put bay leaves in the meat?
The addition of bay leaves to meat converts triglycerides to monounsaturated fats, and for experimentation and confirmation:
Cut the chicken in half and cook each half in a pan and place on one bay leaf, and the other without bay leaf and observe the amount of fat in both pans.
If you have bay leaves, there is no need for a pharmacy. Recent scientific studies have shown that bay leaves have many benefits & helps to get rid of many serious health problems and illnesses.
The benefits of bay leaf are: -
*Bay leaf treats digestive disorders and helps eliminate lumps, Heartburn, Acidity & Constipation.
*It helps regulate bowel movement by drinking hot bay tea.
*It lowers blood sugar and bay leaf is also an antioxidant
*It allows the body to produce insulin by eating it or drinking bay tea for a month.
*IT eliminates bad cholesterol and relieves the body of triglycerides.
*It's very useful in treating colds, flu and severe cough as it is a rich source of vitamin "C", you can boil the leaves and inhale steam to get rid of phlegm and reduce the severity of cough.
*Bay leaf protects the heart from seizures and strokes as it contains cardiovascular protective compounds.
*It's rich in acids such as caffeic acid, quercetin, eigonol and bartolinide, substances that prevent the formation of cancer cells in the body.
*It eliminates insomnia and anxiety, if taken before bed, helps you relax and sleep peacefully.
Drinking a cup of boiled bay leaves twice a day breaks kidney stones and cures infections ...
Just like garlic and ginger are a must find amongst my collection of spices, Bay leaves are a must see in my collection of spices too(my little spice secrets to good aroma and flavor) 👌👍
Do you use bay leaves in your cooking?

What get’s you through your exercise routine?
I have to admit, I have to talk myself into exercising. But I have made a pact with hubby that we will hold each other accountable - on the weekends we can work exercise into our schedule. It works for us (even if he is loosing weight a lot faster then me). This exercise pact is part of our journey to a healthier lifestyle and focus on wellness.
While I am being honest here I have to have help getting through my exercise. If I am playing my music it has to be fast and upbeat, it gets me through on the treadmill. But it is a tough push when I am on the recumbent bike. Given my hip problems I experience foot and leg cramps. So I spray those areas with my magnesium spray before starting. But I found that I can keep going by multi-tasking, like a true Gemini, I find that watching training videos really helps me push through, and even make it past my planned 30 minutes!
What do you do to get through your exercise routine?

August is Wellness Month: Add Weights to your workout
Weekends are the time that David and I really focus on working out, usually treadmill and recumbent bike - switching off. I put an average for 11 and 12 hour days at work, so many times I just can not mentally or physically work in work-outs during the week. I'm good on working on the personal pampering, especially those that I can do in 5 minutes or less (thank you Jordan Essentials for making it so easy)! In reading an article from the Houston Chronicle (see Below) it would be easy to work in some weights even for 5 minutes a day (a good starting point for me) I have weights already so I don't have to run out and buy any (I'm told full water bottles work great too)
Incorporating free weights, like dumbbells or kettlebells, in your workouts not only can help with overall fitness, it can also improve your core strength, balance and coordination. They are also a relatively inexpensive way to work out at home. Fitness trainer Leo Johnson demonstrates a few exercises that do just that.
See the steps below and in the link to the slideshow
Start with the kettlebell on the floor slightly in front of you and between your feet, which should be shoulder-width apart. Bend slightly at the knees, hinging at the hips. Grasp the weight and pull it back between your legs to create momentum. Drive your hips forward and straighten your back to propel the kettlebell up to shoulder height. Let the bell return back between your legs. Repeat 10-12 times for three sets.
Hold a kettlebell in your left hand by your side. Step your left leg behind you, coming into a reverse lunge, and then return to standing. Once standing, lift the kettlebell over your head. Keep a slight bend at the elbow joint. Keep your arm close to your head. Lower your left arm back down to the starting position. Repeat 10 times, then switch sides. Target: quads, shoulders and glutes
Lie down on a mat with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Place a kettlebell or dumbbell in one hand overhead. Engage the core and slowly roll up. Repeat 10-12 times on each side. Target: shoulder stabilizer and core

Do you know the Warning signs of a Stroke?
I URGE YOU ALL TO READ & SHARE THIS; YOU COULD SAVE A LIFE BY KNOWING AND PASSING ON THIS SIMPLE INFORMATION.
Stroke has a new indicator! They say if you forward this to ten people, you stand a chance of saving one life. Will you send this along? Blood Clots/Stroke – They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue.
During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall – she assured everyone that she was fine and she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.
They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.
Jane’s husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital – (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don’t die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this.
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke…totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
IDENTIFYING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the ‘3’ steps, STR.
Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. Chicken Soup)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
New Sign of a Stroke ——– Stick out Your Tongue
NOTE: Another ‘sign’ of a stroke is this: Ask the person to ‘stick’ out their tongue. If the tongue is ‘crooked’, if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.
A cardiologist said that if everyone who gets this message shared it with 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.
I have done my part. Will you?

What is Wellness?
Well I've been wondering the same thing myself. I thought I knew what wellness was. But as I read articles, visit different sites. . . it seems that EVERYONE has a DIFFERENT definition of what WELLNESS is.
My, Jordan Essentials TEAM and I are working together to host a WELLENSS SEMINAR on January 18th where Dr. Dawn Bush will be our guest speaking, speaking on Women's Health Issues (January 18th) click here to request more info.
Since we are planning this even I wanted put into my mind what the OFFICIAL DEFINITION is.
Websters Full Definition of WELLNESS
: the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal First known use of the Term 1683.
Wikipedia Full Definition of WELLNESS
Wellness is generally used to mean a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being. It has been used in the context of alternative medicine since Halbert L. Dunn, M.D., began using the phrase high level wellness in the 1950s. The modern concept of wellness did not, however, become popular until the 1970s.[1]
The term has been defined by the Wisconsin-based National Wellness Institute as an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence. [1] This is consistent with a shift in focus away from illness in viewing human health, typical of contexts where the term wellness is used. In other words, wellness is a view of health that emphasizes the state of the entire being and its ongoing development.
Through my eyes, the long and short of the definition of wellness is to be viewed through your own individual eyes. For some wellness might mean being able to run that 10K while for other's it's walking one block further then yesterday. It's loosing 5 or 50 pounds. For others it's about eating better, while for others it's using natural remedies versus pain medication. . .
Personally I know that they way I look at WELLNESS now is not the same as I looked at it as a teenager, or evan as I looked at it last year or 6 months ago . . for me it' evlovling as I become more educated and defining what I want for myself and my family.
What does WELLNESS mean to you?
