TRIVIA THURSDAY: History of Pies!

The Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays are the "BIG Memories of Pie" for me,  so I thought it

would be FUN to share a little Trivia about Pies!

Pies arranged on a table

From Thomasnet

With fall finally in full swing, it’s time we take a moment to enjoy the nice brisk weather, pumpkin spice, apple cider, and everything fall has to offer. This includes those delectable dessert pies that are good enough to not be relegated to a single season.

But have you ever wondered how pies actually got to be a part of our little fall tradition? Why they’re so ingrained as a delicious fall dessert? Well, let’s take a quick look at pie history and see if it’s all it’s baked out to be.

The first pies can be traced all the way back to ancient Egypt around 6000 B.C. where they were originally known as galettes. Most of the first pies were primarily filled with meat as opposed to pumpkin goodness, but this presented a starting point for the packed pastry. It wasn’t until about 1300 B.C. that fruits, nuts, honey, and other products were incorporated into primitive forms of the dessert. Pies as we know them today began to take shape after the tradition of galettes were carried down to the Greeks who eventually passed it down to the Romans. Romans then further spread the delight of pies to Europe around the 12th century and so the cycle of sharing pie continued!

It’s estimated that fruit became a bit more popular to stuff into a pie around the 1500’s. Pie then traveled its way along with other colonials to America in the 1600’s and 1700’s. Pies were continuously adapting and evolving to suit the needs of colonists and settlers alike. As time went on, pies became more and more synonymous with the sweet dessert treat we know today.

FUN Friday: CANDY $10 Billion Industry

This article came across my desk this morning from ThomasNet,  and thought it might be great to share.

The mere mention of candy can bring a smile to a person’s face, from babies to grandmas; age is not a factor where candy lovers are concerned. Just look to two former U.S. Presidents to prove this point. President Nixon was known to love Milky Way bars, often consuming them at breakfast. Jelly beans were the candy of choice for President Reagan, who served more than 3 tons at his inauguration.

It’s no wonder that the U.S. candy industry is projected to have a revenue of $10 billion in 2020. The largest candy producer in the world, the Mars Wrigley Confectionery U.S. division of Mars Inc, boasted $18 billion in net sales in 2018.

Taking a Bite out of the Candy Industry: Sweet Facts

1. Cotton candy was invented by a dentist

Since our younger days, we’ve all heard that candy and cavities go hand in hand, so it’s surprising to note that cotton candy was formulated in 1897 by a dentist, William Morrison, and confectioner John C. Wharton. Together they invented the machine that employed centrifugal force to transform sugar into cotton-like strands. They referred to the finished product as Fairy Floss, and it would not be known as cotton candy until the 1920s.

2. Tootsie Rolls were used for soldier rations

Tootsie Rolls were given to American soldiers during World War II as part of their rations, due to the candy’s ability to endure nearly any harsh weather conditions. Interestingly, Tootsie Rolls played a part in not only World War II but also the Korean War. U.S. soldiers would use the phrase "tootsie roll" as a code name for mortar shells. They also used the candy to patch up fuel line holes in vehicles

3. Some candy can be “healthy”

There are some candies that you can indulge in that are free of fat and cholesterol. Licorice, lollipops, gummies, sour candy, and candy canes all fall into this category. Chocolate lovers would be pleased to know that dark chocolate rates highly for its health benefits. Once not loaded with sugar, dark chocolate can improve heart health and is filled with antioxidants.

4. The world’s most expensive chocolate bar can cost you

The Art Series blend chocolate bar is priced at $685 and is created by To’ak, an Ecuadorian chocolate company. The price tag is driven up by the four-year aged cacao beans used, which are quite rare. This elite bar is sold on the company’s website and also at retailers, including Harrods in London and 2beans in New York. The company’s previous versions retailed at $385.

Menopausal? Switch to products made for Dry Skin

I love reading and learning something new everyday. Finding the time is not always so easy (have a couple months of Prevention Magazine to catch up on). But this article caught my attention because it described me, I used to have OILY, ACNE ridden skin - a constant battle
it's from mbglifestyle: Switch to products made for dry skin. So now that we know just how dramatic these changes are, you can understand why making key shifts in your skin care routine is essential. Given the barrier function is weakened, as well as the skin producing less oil in general, switching to heavier, more moisturizing products will be ideal for most. "The result is that the skin becomes more dry, sensitive, and vulnerable to irritation, inflammation, and rashes," she says. See, one of the main duties of your skin barrier is to keep water and nutrients in—when weakened, it's not as able to do this job: "Because the skin loses some ability to retain moisture, the skin can get pretty dry, especially when there is low humidity. So washing with a gentle cleanser instead of soap—and avoiding aggressive exfoliation or scrubs that could tear or irritate the skin—especially on the face. Applying a moisturizer after washing and while the skin is still damp as well as throughout the day when your skin feels dry. A moisturizer with hyaluronic acid or glycerin can be especially helpful." I'm over 60 and have the most beautiful skin of my life, that's saying a lot, but I've been using the Jordan Essential Dry Skin Care System

Make up Bag Essentials

Whether you are applying makeup for the weekly grocery run or for your weekly Zoom meeting, having a natural and fresh face of makeup can boost any mood, and our Jordan Essentials Mineral Makeup was designed with fantastic natural ingredients to enhance your natural beauty.

Here is a sneak peek at our favorite mineral makeup products you’ll find in our makeup bag!

Eye Fix Primer: Yes this product is great for eyes, but it can be used in so many other ways! Depending on your skin tone and how you see our suggestions fit your needs, these two products can be used on your whole face.

eyefix.jpg

Beige- This primer is great to use as color on eyelids and to prime before adding eye shadow. The beige is also great to be used as a concealer underneath eyes and other areas of discoloration on the face including veins, sunspots, freckles, scarring, and more!

Light- This primer has more of a chalky consistency that helps other products stick to your eye or face. It can be used to keep your eye shadow in place for a long day or to naturally highlight areas of your face.

Here are some of our favorite places to contour with the Light primer-

Down the bridge of our nose

eyefix.jpg

Underneath our eyebrows

In the inside corners of our eyes

In the side creases of our nose

Along wrinkles around our mouth when smiling

Right in the middle of our chin.

Tinted Moisturizer: Our tinted moisturizer comes in 9 shades, and it has great moisturizing benefits that can replace your morning moisturizer, if you choose. We use it after contouring with the eye primer because the tinted moisturizer will help blend and give a finished covering.

Tip- Use our Kabuki Brush to apply because we are obsessed! Just add three drops to the brush, and dab it across your face. Then, start to blend with a light touch.

Mineral Powder: If you want a look with a little more coverage, add a mineral powder in your shade to your makeup routine. It is best applied with our Kabuki brush as well right after your tinted moisturizer.

If you are wanting a more lightweight look, stick to just applying a brushing of mineral powder. Because of the natural reflection from the minerals, this powder can offer sun protection for those days spent outdoors hiking or at the lake.

Natural Cheek Tint & Contour: This multipurpose stick works wonders, and it comes in two beautiful colors! It can be used to contour as well as add color to cheeks and lips. This tube is perfect to slip from your makeup bag to your purse to have for midday lip and cheek touch ups when you need it!

Pressed Eye Shadow: Whether your look is more of a simple, natural eye or a bold smokey eye, there is a Pressed Eye Shadow for you! Made with Rice Powder, Rosemary, Lavender, Jojoba, and other botanical ingredients, these eyeshadows are certified organic. You will be dazzling with every blink of an eye.

Mascara: There is nothing like having a mascara that you absolutely love, and we have two!

Flawless Mascara- This lash building formula is black and perfect for contact wearers because it will not smudge or flake

Amplified Mascara- Looking for a wet, gloss finish? The Amplified Mascara will give you fuller and longer lashes without SLS, Parabens, and Mineral oil.

Lip Color: A makeup look just isn’t complete without a beautiful lip color, and we have so many amazing colors in both our Lip Butter Lipstick and Tinted Lip Gloss that we love.

Our Lip Butter Lipstick is infused with moisturizing vitamins and shea butter, and it takes our lips to the perfect shade for any occasion.

The Tinted Lip Gloss is a healthy infused lip gloss. It is perfect to use for a gorgeous sheen that both looks good and is good for you!

Don’t forget to apply your Lip Liner to add lip definition that helps keep your lip color inside the lines. Our Lip Liner is a natural color that goes with all lipsticks and lip glosses, and it requires no sharpening, just twist!

A good tool improves the way you work, and that applies to makeup too! We love using a beautiful set of brushes when we apply our natural makeup.

Of course, these are guidelines for how we like to wear our Jordan Essentials makeup. Your routine can be completely unique to you, simply whatever works best for your and your skin tone!

Back to School: Quarantine Edition

Whether your little ones will be returning to school in person, online, or homeschooled, it is that time of year to have all of your back to school essentials and routine in order. I know we’ve been hearing this over and over, but this year really is going to look different.

Here are a handful of things to have on deck for back to school and some tips to getting back into the school routine.

Wash Hands - Wash. Wash. Wash. Encourage your little ones to wash their hands every time they have the opportunity, especially the kids that are back to school! Also, continue reminding them how important it is to not touch their face.

Make sure to stock up on soap to have in the home to be used throughout the day. Our favorite: Jordan Essentials Foaming Hand Soap.  If you already have our Foaming Hand Soap, you can buy a 32 oz refill jug so you don’t have to replace your sink-side bottle.

Stay Moisturized - Extra hand washing does run the risk of drying out skin, but never fear, Jordan Essentials Foaming Hand Soap moisturizes while it cleanses! For an extra boost of moisture, keep some Shea Body Butter, Hand and Body Lotion or a Lotion Bar by the sink.

Keep your children in school protected and moisturized by sending them with a lotion bar in their backpacks! It won’t spill or leak, and it is more moisturizing than regular water based lotions! Also, it will easily last until winter break, so it sounds like a winner to us.

Take Extra Precautions - You can never be too careful when it comes to safeguarding the health of our little ones, and that is why you will want to have our Resistance products on hand for back to school. These products are a combination of five powerful essential oils: Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Rosemary, and Eucalyptus. These oils are antibacterial, anti fungal, and antiviral making them a powerful combination to keep your family healthy.

*Jordan Essentials does not claim to prevent or cure any disease. Beneficial oils are part of a healthy lifestyle*

Ways to use your Resistance Spray

  • ·         Spray clothing and backpacks to help protect from germs and unpleasant odors
  • ·         Spray soles of feet to protect from germs
  • ·         Spritz cotton ball and place inside shoes to remove odor

Ways to use your Resistance Dropper

  • ·         Diffuse to cleanse the air
  • ·         Add a few drops to empty dishwasher for an extra cleansing boost
  • ·         Add to laundry cycle for cleaner clothes (throw your masks in this load too!)
  • ·         Add to carpet steamer to remove odors and protect from germs in carpet

Have children moving off to college? The Resistance Spray and Resistance Roller are the perfect products to send with them to use throughout their dorm and while on campus.

Wear Your Mask - If your little ones are comfortable with wearing a mask, make sure they have it on when out in public and at school. To help keep your masks clean, wash them frequently and spritz them with Green & Clean (allow them to fully dry before wearing again).

We understand that wearing a mask can be uncomfortable at points, and one of our very own Jordies shared an awesome tip to help ease that discomfort.

“Wearing a mask was causing me to get super congested and then I'd end up with a sore throat, which would cause me more anxiety.

I rubbed the Magnesium Plus Peace Blend stick right where my nose is and Bam, Anxiety gone! My airway stayed open and I didn't have a sore throat after either! Too good not to share! I hope this tip helps someone else too!”

Create Routine - Routine makes the world go round. After a few months of not much to do, you little ones are more than likely not used to routine. Start off back to school time by setting a standard wakeup and bedtime. Every morning stick to the same order of events - Make beds, get dressed, eat breakfast, brush teeth and then pack up school things. Same thing applies to bedtime.

Creating routine is important for all kids whether they are going to school or learning virtually at home. For those at home, create a routine for the whole day. Set a designated time for certain subjects as well as lunch time, play time, snack time, and any other activities throughout the day.

Designated Work Space - If your kids will be learning at home, make sure to establish a designated work area. This will help young kids differentiate between work time and play time. With this, ensure there are no distractions in their work space. This includes iPads not used for educational purposes, toys, and other distracting screens.

We hope these tips help ease any concerns or hesitations as we all transition back into school. Remember that whatever decision you make for you and your children for back to school is the right decision because you know your family and their needs best.

8 Tips to Nip Allergies in the Bud

Seasonal allergies are a nuisance that unfortunately, many of us suffer from. With a season change approaching, now is the time to prepare for the changing of the weather and the wave of fall allergies.

Here are 8 tips on how to nip those seasonal allergies in the bud:

Don’t touch your face: You shouldn’t be doing so anyways, but by avoiding touching your eyes and nose, you will prevent pollen from coming in contact and making your symptoms worse.

Close windows: Keep windows in your home and car closed as much as possible to prevent allergens from drifting in.

Incorporate Essential Oils: Our Allergy Blend Essential Oil spray is the perfect blend of Frankincense, Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint essentials oils. This blend of EOs will lessen symptoms such as itchy, puffy eyes while also opening airways and helping you breathe with more ease.

Because our Allergy Spray is a blend, it is safe to spritz directly onto your body (ages 2+), in the air, and even bed lines for a more comfortable night's sleep. This spray can also be used on clothing, towels, rugs, inside your car, and more, and it is safe to be used in homes with pets.

Stay Clean: Allergens can stick to hair, skin, and clothes, so be sure to leave shoes at the door, rinse your hair and body, and toss clothes into the laundry basket after spending time outside. You don’t want to transfer any allergens to your furniture or bedding. With that being said, washing bed sheets frequently and spritzing with our Allergy spray will ensure they are allergen free because it is inevitable that allergens will make it into your bedding at some point.

Stay inside: Not all the time, but it is best to stay inside on particularly warm and windy days! If you do spend time outside, wear big sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat to prevent allergens from getting into eyes. It is also best to spend time outside after rain showers because rain helps to settle any allergens in the air. Pollen tends to be highest from 5-10 am and at dusk, so plan to run errands during the day.

Vacuum before leaving the house: Vacuuming stirs up dust and allergens increasing the likelihood of them triggering symptoms. Plan to vacuum your home before stepping out to allow dust and allergens to settle. You can also spray Green & Clean in rooms you have vacuumed to help the dust settle quicker.

Air Purifier: Using an air purifier will help remove contaminants from the air, and in turn, should decrease your exposure to pollen and dust. Jordan Essentials Green & Clean can also be added to air purifiers for added moisture in the air.

Keep pets clean: We all love our furry friends, but during peak allergy season they can become a walking allergen if they spend any time outside. Keep pets off of furniture and out of the bedroom, and wash them more frequently to clean them of pollens they may have picked up while outside.

There you have it, 8 ways to make it through allergy season without itchy eyes and a scratchy throat. Of course, if symptoms become more severe, seek professional medical advice.
